Welcome to the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory
It is not just a project. It is our mission.
Dr. Terry Bates, CLEREL Director (cv)
As a proud member of Cornell AgriTech, our lab supports the grape industries of western New York and Pennsylvania through Precision Viticulture, Vineyard Mechanization, and Optimized Nutrient Management.
Efficient Vineyard
New Efficient Vineyard Themed Projects
The USDA-SCRI Hi-Res Vineyard Nutrient Management project led by Markus Keller at Washington State University aims to develop new grapevine mineral nutrient sensors for spatial mapping and VR management.
The USDA-AFRI MyEV Small-Medium Farms project led by Terry Bates at Cornell is focused on developing precision viticulture tools for growers and providing experiential learning through on-farm experimentation.
“Balanced Pruning of Dormant Grapevines with Autonomous Robots” is a USDA-NIFA-National Robotics Initiative funded project using imaging technology, AI, robotics, and viticulture information for the future of grapevine pruning.
The Original EV Project
Funded through the USDA-NIFA-Specialty Crop Research Initiative, the Efficient Vineyard project is a national effort to advance the use of precision viticulture in wine, juice, and table grape production. The disciplines of engineering, precision agriculture, viticulture, and economics come together to measure vineyard soil, canopy, and crop characteristics, model spatial data for viticulture information, and manage vineyard crop load through variable-rate machine applications.
myEV Platform
my.efficientvineyard.com puts our research in your hands with a suite of easy-to-use, online GIS tools that help you collect, organize, map, and analyze your vineyard data.
Innovation Through Teamwork
The CLEREL research staff is dedicated to bringing quality science-based information to our stakeholders with expertise in viticulture, vineyard mechanization, precision agriculture, and spatial data processing
Our Facilities
Opened in 2009, CLEREL is an agricultural field station and extension center built to serve the land grant mission of Cornell University. The 50-acre research farm currently grows 11 grape varieties, including juice and wine grapes, hops, willow, and vegetables.
The Lake Erie Regional Grape Program
CLEREL is home to this award winning extension program dedicated to bringing the grape industry timely and relevant information.
